WAY BEYOND

‘Way Beyond’ is a survey exhibition of 20 Australian Walking Artists. This exhibition brings together artworks inspired by explorations of the intersection of artmaking and human terrestrial movement.

Australian Walking Artists (AWA)
is an informal, growing network of artists and creatives who love to walk in and explore urban, suburban and rural environments. AWA is exploring what walking art is, as it’s not one thing.

For some, walking is part of the creative process — a way of generating art. For others, it is an experience or form of art. Members have not defined walking art, allowing artists to self-identify with the practice. Walking art will mean different things to different people.

Convenors of the network are: Molly Wagner (Sydney NSW) and Kim V. Goldsmith (Dubbo NSW). Molly Wagner says the assembled works and walks highlight the rich diversity of creative walking practice within the Australian Walking Artists network.

Historical precedent

Way Beyond sets an historical precedent in Australia as being the most comprehensive exhibition of Australian Walking Artists to date. Not since the 2018 Lismore Regional Gallery exhibition From Here to There: Australian Art and Walking, curated by Jane Denison and Sharne Wolff, has the spotlight been on what is more widely recognised internationally as a significant act to create artworks and address the topics of our times.

Renata’s artwork:

This exhibition will feature my recent artwork ‘Gondwanan Rainforest Canopy’ I created at my art residency on the Binna Burra Cultural Landscape. The residency provided me with the opportunity to take numerous rainforest walks, and to focus my research on Gondwanan lineage plants. Binna Burra property is located amongst the World Heritage Rainforest of Australia in the Lamington National Park, Yugambeh region.
During the art residency I worked with a local paleobotanist Dr Ray Carpenter who advised and helped me locate Gondwanan lineage plants on Binna Burra land.

“... rainforests at Binna Burra and surrounds are part of our World Heritage: nowhere else on Earth is there such a rich representation of vegetation with links to ancient Gondwanan floras …” Ray Carpenter.
