ABOUT AQUA LIMINA

This exhibition positions water as a connective, life-sustaining force that links ecosystems, communities, and cultures. The project encourages authentic, locally rooted connections to art, culture, and environment. With almost thirty artists confirmed to take part in Aqua Limina — a tidal wave of creativity flowing across Southern Queensland.

This exhibitions also provide an opportunity for the inaugural Aqua Limina Excellence in Art, Nature & Science Award, judged by water scientist Dr Nadeeka Rathnayake.

This recognition is especially meaningful within a context that brings together artistic practice, environmental awareness, and scientific perspectives.

UPDATE: on 11 April Renata Buziak was the recipient of this Award “for her exceptional ability to capture the threshold of transformation. This award celebrates her unique methodology and her commitment revealing the unseen beauty within our ecological systems.”

Aboutn Renata’s artwork:

Threshold Waters — Where Fresh Meets Salt

In Southeast Queensland, the meeting of fresh and salt water defines fragile coastal systems — thresholds that are ecologically delicate and socially entangled. Aquifers, creeks, tides, urban development, and rising seas shape these shifting edges. Fresh and salt resist and merge, continually reshaping one another.

This work was created on Minjerribah, Quandamooka Country — a place where freshwater lakes, creeks, and coastal waters hold deep ecological and cultural significance. I made the large cyanotype directly on the beach with sand, fresh water, seawater, and sunlight.

Cyanotype is a cameraless photographic process in which sunlight activates a sensitised surface. I shaped / drew a stream into the sand, widening it into branching waterways before it met the sea, then splashed water onto cotton to expose the image in dialogue with the elements.

Working within tidal conditions required attentiveness. Clouds shifted. Sand moved. The tide advanced. The environment became collaborator. The work invites reflection on resilience, responsibility, and care for these living coastal thresholds.

Aqua Limina artists accross 3 venues include:

Alexandra Dunn, Barbara Stephenson, Beth Thompson, Brett Leavy, Desert- Rain, Diedrie Tehan, Ezra Harvey, Faclity Smith, Guy Warren, Inessa Ivascanin, Janelle Nicholson, Juniper Sikora, Karen McPhail-Bell, Karen Rushworth, Kelly Hogan, Kylie Martin, Lisa Behan, Lisa Gay, Lynley Haliday, Masha Marjanovich, Natelie Marie Scupin, Nicky Rasmin, Nicole Brockett, Paul Harris, Renata Buziak, Sandra Temple, Bronwen Shannon, Shannon Hunter, Sissel Marie Morely, Susan Lhamo, and Twisted Murf.
