Walking Art Now: A Survey of Australian Walking Art,

This touring exhibition presents work by artists who incorporate walking as a central component of their practice through methods of creative investigation and/or production.

Walking as a creative practice brings us into the present moment beyond the art world, abilities, and the challenges of today. It connects us to past, present and future, to place and identity, and to what’s possible. The exhibition is informed by walking both as a literal act and a metaphorical exploration.

Walking Art Now spans rural, urban and wild landscapes, and is concerned with engaging communities and fostering collective environmental awareness and wellbeing.

The exhibition features work by members of Australian Walking Artists Inc. (AWA), an Australia-wide network of artists united through the intersection of art and walking. Following successful exhibitions at Articulate in Sydney, 2024, and Kandos NSW, 2025, the Gympie iteration will include local, regional and national artists.

The exhibition is also accompanied by the publication: ‘Australian Walking Artists: 24/25’.

I’m thrilled that two of my textiles feature in the WALKING ART NOW exhibition:

Breath In The Ocean Air, and Banksia Blue, 56 x 80cm, Ed/3, prints on velvet.

Walking on Minjerribah shapes my practice. Through slow coastal walks I encounter resilient flora such as Banksia serrata and Ipomoea pes-caprae, plants long valued for their healing properties. Banksia nectar has traditionally soothed coughs, while beach morning glory leaves have been used to ease inflammation and marine stings, and to stabilise fragile dunes.

Banksia Blue and Breath in the Ocean Air are biochromes printed on velvet, their deep blues echoing ocean and sky. Created through a process that fuses organic matter with photographic materials over time, the works trace plant presence, transformation and the quiet breath of the island landscape.

AWA Retreat at Rainbow Beach, 20 – 23 August

Walking the Wilds, the Winds and the Rainbow 

To complement the exhibition Walking Art Now AWA organised a Retreat for members (20 – 23 Aug) and a special day of walkshops and activities for both members and non-mebers on 22 August.

AWA Retreat will be based at Rainbow Beach (3h drive from Brisbane) and the Cooloola region in Queensland, a spectacular area renowned for its beaches, high dunes, wilderness and wildflowers.

AWA Retreat 2026 will provide you with opportunities to:

• Explore walking practices in the unique locations of the Cooloola region
• Meet other walking artists and experiment with practices and processes
• Share your ideas and participate in collaboration and experimentation.
• 10 Walkshops to choose from on Sat 22 August

Cyanotype Botanicals WALKSHOP:

On Saturday 22 August during the Retreat I will facilitate a walkshop:

In this hands-on workshop create your own unique prints and gain skills to continue exploring this captivating art form at home. Explore the historical photographic process out in the field using plants, found objects, and sunlight. We will then process our works back at the hall and create a collection of small paper works as a momento of our day.

• 10 participants.
• All materials provided: cyanotype supplies, paper.
• Bring your own small objects for a personal touch if you like.
• For beginners, adults and 15 plus.
• This is not a sit down workshop. People with mobility difficulties may need assistance.

Join us at the Retreat, there are 5 available walkshops to choose from in the morning and 5 in the afternoon, lunch is included. You can alslo join us for dinner (optional).
