Wildflowering by Design Workshops

Curators, Lisa Chandler and Sue Davis, and artists: Renata Buziak and Edith Rewa from the ‘Wildflowering by Design‘ exhibition will visit Wondai for a workshop weekend prior to the exhibition in December. Opportunities for local artists to participate in the show will also be discussed.

Introduction to ‘Wildflowering by Design’ and the upcoming exhibition

Wildflower Paper Lantern Workshop

Learn how to make a wildflower inspired paper lantern to take home. Use naturally sourced products, a range of papers and wildflower prints you will add your own creative flair as you work through the process while absorbing Sue’s extensive knowledge of a range of Queensland flora. All materials provided in this hands-on workshop.

Dr Sue Davis is co-curator for the ‘Wildflowering by Design’ exhibition and initiator of the ‘Wild/flower Women’ series of exhibitions and projects. Sue has been an arts educator for decades working across school, university and community sectors. She uses a range of media and arts processes to capture and respond to wildflowers and the natural world. SUNDAY – 9.00 am – 2.30 pm

Wildflower pattern play

In this workshop you will be encouraged to play, experiment and observe, drawing on local native wildflowers to create a series of nature based patterns. You will be guided through drawing and mark making a variety of pattern styles by Textile Designer and Illustrator Edith Rewa. All abilities are welcome, this is a workshop about creativity and slowing down to collaborate and admire nature’s natural beauty. All materials will be provided.

Edith Rewa is an Australian illustrator and textile designer currently based in Meanjin/Brisbane. Her work is grounded in protecting the diversity of Australia’s natural environments. She often looks for new ways to entwine the worlds of traditional botany with the contemporary Art + Design space, whilst exhibiting native plantscapes that are under-represented. Her works can be found on silk scarves and art prints, on book covers, stationary, and printed textiles. She has a particular fondness for the flowers of Australian heathlands and for the past three years has enjoyed exploring the wallum of South East Queensland.

Discover the World of Cyanotype

Create your own unique artwork and gain skills to continue exploring this captivating art form at home. Explore this historical photographic process using plants, found objects, and sunlight. Keep your unique prints as cherished artwork or as gifts to someone special.

In this workshop, you will create your own stunning cyanotype prints on cotton and paper in a relaxed atmosphere and learn some history of the process, coating, developing and fixing techniques. You will acquire the skills to continue experimenting with cyanotype at home.

Dr Renata Buziak is a biochrome photo-media artist, researcher, and educator with over 15 years of teaching experience. With a focus on plant life and helping people to reconnect with nature, her captivating artwork has been exhibited nationally and internationally. Renata holds a PhD from Queensland College of Art, Griffith University. Her art has received several awards and is featured in private and public collections, as well as on ABC TV’s Gardening Australia.

Q&A and discussion about ways that local artists and designers might have their work included in a section of the exhibition, scheduled for December 2023-January 2024.
