Beyond the Basics – Dive Deep into Cyanotype Printing

Earth Arts: Kinship Workshop

Take your cyanotype skills to the next level while exploring a deeper connection with plants, place and the more-than-human world.

In this relaxed, small-group workshop, I will share advanced cyanotype techniques alongside insights from my own art and science practice and years of working with plants and nature. We will explore cyanotype as more than a photographic process — as an opportunity to slow down, observe closely and create in dialogue with the natural world.

Inspired by the Earth Arts Kinship theme, we will consider how the plants and natural materials around us can become creative collaborators. Through gathering, observing, arranging and experimenting, you will be encouraged to notice the forms, textures and stories held within the materials we work with.

In this workshop you will:

  • Create unique cyanotype artworks on paper in various sizes and on a calico bag
  • Learn to coat your own paper and calico
  • Experiment with wet cyanotype printing and applying colour
  • Explore bleaching and toning techniques
  • Work with plant cuttings and found natural objects to create your own compositions
  • Experiment with different ways of working with plants and materials, allowing both your creative decisions and the natural processes of cyanotype to shape the outcome

  • Through this guided, hands-on experience, you will develop an advanced set of cyanotype skills and gain the confidence to continue experimenting at home.

Most importantly, the workshop invites you to slow down and look more closely at the natural world. By working directly with plants and other natural materials, we will explore cyanotype as a way of paying attention, building connection and creating with — rather than simply representing — nature.
