My Polish Meadows series

I am looking forward to meeting community members on the day and sharing my work with long time participants of the Festival and meeting new visitors . I will be showcasing a few artworks from my Polish Meadows series of healing herbs I learned about in my childhood in Poland, and rediscovered them years later on my trips back to my  childhood home towm.

Polish Meadows is a series of works focusing on healing flora of Southeast Poland. During my childhood I was introduced to the therapeutic power of plants by my mother and grandmother, and joined in collecting local plants to make home remedies. While visiting Poland in recent years, I rediscovered some of these herbs and weeds, including jarzębina, jasnota biała and babka zwyczajna, spontaneously growing in my hometown Janów Lubelski. My Polish Meadows catalogue includes a list of healing properties of these and other plants.

I create images by forming alliances between plants and photographic emulsions. I call these images ‘Biochromes’ because the natural occurrence of decomposition on the photographic materials results in an array of colourful pigmentation arranged in complex and detailed compositions, aided by nature’s own creative skill.

The chemical and biological reactions that take place during the process of decay are fundamental to my image making process. This art and science endeavour traces the activities of the microbes; reveals the complex process of decay while addressing its metamorphic power in the cycle of life.
