Gondwanan Biochromes

About Gondwanan Biochromes at Binna Burra & Artist-in-Residence

In 2022 Binna Burra Lodge invited me to create my signature biochrome images on the Binna Burra Cultural Landscape, as the inaugural Artist-in-Residence (AiR) in the legacy of Vida Lahey, a prominent Queensland artist and educator (1882 – 1968), and I was greatly honoured to receive this opportunity.

Located on the Yugambeh language groups’ country, in the World Heritage area of Woonoongoora / Lamington National Park in Queensland – Binna Burra allows visitors to experience unique flora, of which ancestral lineages go back to Gondwanaland millions of years ago.

During my residency, which span over 12 months and many visits to Binna Burra, I created a new series of biochrome images of rainforest flora, with focus on Gondwanan lineage plants, such as Nothofagus moorei (Antarctic Beech) and Callicoma serratifolia (Black Wattle).

In addition to publications-based research, I sought guidance from the local community. The most instrumental person in my research was palaeobotanist Dr Ray Carpenter. Ray shared with me stories and knowledge, advised and helped me locate Gondwanan plants.

Knowing about plants enriches my experience of life and helps me to connect with nature on a deep level. I love sharing what I learn and I hope that my experience can inspire you to connect with nature too.

The Gondwanan Biochromes series consists of works on paper, textiles and video, and was first exhibited 4 – 15 December 2022 at Binna Burra.
