Roots and Returns is a large-scale biochrome artwork, printed on velvet, that I created with native wildflowers from the Granite Belt region of Queensland. This richly layered piece was developed on a bushland property where The Piano Mill hosts annual gatherings of experimental music and art — a place of creative exchange, sound, and story.
At the heart of the composition lies a veined Glycine clandestina (Twining glycine), surrounded by Geranium neglectum (Swamp cranesbill), Hypericum gramineum (Small St John’s wort), Ranunculus inundatus (River buttercup), and Viola betonicifolia (Mountain Violet). The plants radiate toward a glowing centre — a visual echo of communal gatherings, where people come together in a circle to share stories, ideas, and creativity.
Created through my signature biochrome process, which fuses photographic materials with organic matter over time, this artwork reflects the cycles of decay, renewal, and belonging. The use of soft velvet amplifies the tactile, luminous quality of the print, inviting deeper reflection and sensory connection.
Part of an ongoing art and science practice, Roots and Returns is both a celebration of Australian flora and a meditation on connection — with place, with others, and with nature’s ever-changing rhythms.
